Setting YOUR Definite Goals

What is a goal? Where can it be found? How can this goal be possessed and refined? A Goal is that thing you passionately desire to achieve in the future using the abilities you have. A goal needs a vision and a mission.

The key word is ‘your’ because these are the goals that pertain to your life. You cannot set goals for others or for the school. Each goal must be attached to your broad aspirations. Goals must be set at the right time. Life loses meaning if it lacks focus. Your focus as a student will depend on the goals you set. It is a ‘crime’ to be a student with no goal. Your goals are within your reach. It is in possession. You need to have a weighing balance for your efforts-goals.Goals must be set at the right time

A major problem with most students is that they just work hard without having goals to motivate them. In this case, the students can never evaluate their performance. It is a risk to be in school and have no specific goals. These are your goals; they are not the ones set for you by your parents or your school. Remember that anyone can set goals for you that are either not ambitious enough or too ambitious for you.

You are the author of your goals. In setting goals, you need lesser help than in the process of achieving these goals. This is so because you set goals that are fit for you. People might despise your ability and make your goals lose their intensity. On the other hand, another person might be over confident about you and thus set unreachable goals for you. Therefore, it’s your right and freedom to have your goals set.

As a student, you have all the reason to set ‘wild’ goals because you are assured of support from your parents, teachers, other students and even the environment. This should challenge you to have powerful goals and promise yourself to be at your best. There is no one who will shy away from colourful goals that are set with purpose and passion. A goal must stick to the mind and the heart, not to the paper. Most students only write very beautiful goals but they are left on the paper to realize themselves. This is a common mistake that has cost many students. God did not give each one of us goals written on a piece of paper; he inscribed them in our hearts so that we can visit and revisit them many times and remind ourselves where we are and where we to be ought to going.

Don’t be obsessed with what you can at the moment but what is possible in the future

Setting goals is not as simple as it might seem. It requires a sober and critical mind. The best way to set goals is to have a set order of priority.

Every student should set goals based on some guidelines. Before setting any goal:

  • Know your intentions; the ultimate target you want in life.
  • Understand your strengths and capabilities.
  • Evaluate your weaknesses and limitations.
  • Factor in the time you have and the available resources.
  • Set your attitudes right to avoid biased goal setting.
  • Involve your heart and mind; they must be in rhythm.
  • Avoid all unnecessary negative beliefs.
  • Always work from the known to the unknown and don’t fear to take risk.

"The Ultimate Recipe for a Wholesome Student is a must read for every student and stakeholders in the education sector. As an educationist, I am convinced that this book is truly a recipe that has potential to bring the best out of every student.

Human beings rarely appreciate the value of what they have until they miss it. The journey through school is as important as the destination. In his unique way, Samuel Kanja captures this important journey describing the challenges, pitfalls and opportunities.

It is regrettable that many youths today expect to start at the top. The book teaches them the value of working their way up. Those who take shortcuts to success short circuit the sustainability and effectiveness of their success.

Through his life’s example, the author has demonstrated that humble beginnings are no barrier if one is willing to work hard and make the most of every opportunity. It is an immortal lesson for all those who blame circumstances for their failure. In a very subtle way, the book argues against this scarcity mentality and elucidates the mind-set of winners. "
